Like many of the Classic Blues singers of the 1920s, Josie Miles' background was in vaudeville and African-American musical theatre. Miles appeared in the touring company of Sissle and Blake's musical comedy "Shuffle Along" in 1922 and in the following year she appeared in "Runnin' Wild" by James P. Johnson, Cecil Mack, F.E. Miller and Aubrey L. Lyles. Josie apparently moved to Kansas City sometime around 1928. Her last records were recorded that year on the Gennett label in Richmond, Indiana. These were gospel records released under the name Missionary Josephine Miles and Sister Elizabeth Cooper. She apparently stopped performing in the 1930s and devoted herself to the church. Reportedly Josie Miles died in an automoble accident sometime in the 1950s or 1960s.
