Pianist Cliff Jackson put together a group called the Crazy Kats in 1927. The band had a steady engagement at the Lenox Club for about five years starting in 1927. The Lenox Club at 652 Lenox Ave. was on the same block as the more famous Cotton Club. Members of Duke Ellington's Cotton Club Orchestra often sat in with the Crazy Kats during intermission and after their show at the Cotton Club. Some of the bands records were released under the name of Marvin Smolev and his Syncopators. Smolev was a band contractor in New York.
